Welcome to Nuestra Familia Tree
This site was created with the soul
purpose of having a place where the Benavides or Castañeda could
come and visit to find who their relatives are. Since I share both surnames
I felt I should build this web site using both names. Aside from my immediate
family, I know that most of you will only focus on one side of the family,
be it Castañeda or Benavides. I want to make it clear to both families
that I plan to dedicate myself equally to both sides.
The idea of creating a web site came to me about a
year ago. However; the idea for starting a family tree goes back a lot further.
I began creating the family tree when I found a free genealogy program on
the Internet about three years ago. Since then I have been accumulating information
about the family and entering all my findings in this program. Around that
time is when I felt the need to share all this with the rest of the family,
but I did not know how. At that time I thought that maybe I could copy all
this information on cd-rom and give it or sell it to the family. However;
I didn't have a cd-burner nor the funds to purchase one. Plus I didn't even
know if that was such a good idea or if it would even be successful. The
good thing is that I kept gathering information, hoping that I would come
up with a way to introduce this to the family. Perhaps some of you might
remember around that time I would show up at family functions with a huge
sheet of paper that was taped together. I did this to have some sort of reference
and to show to those interested a chart of the family tree. Unfortunately
at that time, that was the only way of me sharing this information with you.
One day I went on the Internet to see if there was
a latest version of the genealogy program I was using. I saw that there
was and after downloading it I found that this new version allowed me to
generate web pages based on the information I had been gathering for the
past two years. This made my life much easier because I now had a way of
presenting my tree to the family in a way that would be simple to navigate.
It took me a while before I realized that there was free Internet space available
where I could start my web site. I first tried this 50megs.com site but that
didn't work out. Then I came to 0catch.com and all my problems were solved.
So far I am pretty happy with them. The only trade off is all that advertising
and the occasional pop-ups. The good thing is that it's FREE! Maybe one day
I'll pay for my own site with no pop-ups or advertising, but until then this
will do.
